Russia intensifies fight against fish poachers
Head of the Russian Fishery Agency Andrey Krayny declares that the fight against fish poachers will be intensified.
In 2008 almost 70 000 violation of Russian laws on fisheries were registered. More than 1,6 million EUR were given in penalties and over 3000 persons were prosecuted.
- The positive results from the agency’s territorial directorates’ work in 2008 gives hope to even stronger control in 2009, says Head of the Russian Fishery Agency Andrey Krayny to Fishonline.ru.
Two new means for control will be introduced in 2009, Krayny says: a mobile quick reaction force unit called “Piranha” and unmanned aircrafts adjusted to surveillance of fishing grounds.
The Russian Fishery Agency has lately been working on a draft law on control and surveillance of transshipment, transport, reprocessing and storage of fish out at sea.
Last year the Russian Fishery Agency (Rosrybolovstvo) accepted a plan for enhanced state control over the fisheries sector through a plan for cooperation between its territorial directorates, the police, the Border Guard and the public prosecutor’s office. Contacts with the Federal Bailiff Service have also been strengthened, which should increase efficiency when it comes to collecting penalties, Fishonline.ru writes.
