Russia might boost number of fishery inspectors
The number of fishery inspectors on board Russian trawlers might be more than doubled, Head of the Russian State Committee of Fisheries, Andrey Krainy, says.
The measure, which is intended to help fight illegal fishing, will shortly be presented to the Russian government, Mr Krainy yesterday confirmed to the press. The powerful fishery boss said that he will request the government to allocate funding for an additional 5000 inspectors. From before, 3044 inspectors operate on Russian fishery vessels, B-port.com reports. In Soviet times the number of fishery inspectors is reported to have been as high as 25,000. At the same time, Mr. Krainy underlined that the inspectors will not be authorized to detain law violators, but only conduct catch control and help protect marine resources.
