Russia - number one on Arctic air transport

During his visit to the Russian Antarctic base of “Novolazarevskaya” today Russian First Deputy PM said that Russia intends to become monopolist on air traffic in the Arctic and Antarctica.

Mr. Sergey Ivanov said that Russia needs two kinds of aircrafts, in order to solve its transport problems in polar areas – upgraded versions of the Il-76 and Il-114 aircrafts. Head of the Russian United Corporation on aircraft construction, Mr. Aleksey Fyodorov, says a new version of the Il-76 transport plane will be ready for use in 2010. At the same time, several Il-114T aircrafts equipped with with “skies” will be built.
