Russia plans eight new subs

The Russian Navy plans to construct eight new nuclear submarines of the “Borey” class by year 2015.

Deputy Head Navy Commander Aleksandr Tatarinov last week confirmed that the new national military programme includes the serial production of eight subs of the project 955 “Borey” class, the first fourth generation Russian nuclear subs. Mr. Tatarinov also said that the new “Bulava” missile, an adjusted model of the Topol-M missile, will be ready to be installed on submarines in 2009. Russia by today only has one vessel, which is built to handle the new missile – the “Aleksandr Nevskii”, a recently modernized Typhoon vessel. In addition the first “Borey” vessel — the Yuri Dolgorukii — is currently in the last phase of construction at the Sevmash yard in Severodvinsk, Arkhangelsk Oblast.
