Russia plans new generation nuclear-powered icebreaker
A new generation nuclear-powered icebreaker will be built in Russia by year 2015, a representative of the federal Sea and River Fleet Agency confirms. The vessel will be applied all-year-round on the Northern Sea Route.
The project, which currently is in a preparation phase, will have a 15 billion RUB price tag. 190 million RUB was allocated the project in 2006, a sum which was raised to 264 million RUB in 2007 and 918 million RUB in 2008-2009. The federal official spoke at a recent conference on the Northern Sea Route, taking place in Sankt Petersburg, portnews.ru reports. Russia last year launched its 9th nuclear-powered icebreaker, the “50-years victory”. The vessel had then been under construction for almost 20 years.
