Russia ratified Human Right Convention

Russia last week became the last of 47 countries to ratify the European Convention on Human Rights.

As BarentsObserver has reported, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev last year pushed on the legislators in the State Duma for a speedy ratification of the 14th protocol of the European Convention on Human Rights.

Late last week, the president got his will when the State Duma ratified the convention.

The State Duma earlier refused to ratify the protocol, arguing that it is not in line with Russian national interests. The protocol introduces reforms in the Human Right Convention, meant to heighten its role and influence. The protocol was signed by former President Putin in 2005, but was in 2006 turned down by the parliament
