Russia seeks new glory in fisheries
According to a proposed new federal programme on fisheries, a total of 61 billion RUB (1,65 billion EUR) will be invested in the Russian fishery sector in the period 2009-2013.
The programme is intended to increase fish catch and processing to the level of the Soviet period, head of the Russian State Committee of Fisheries, Andrey Krainy, says.
A total of 32 billion RUB is to be invested by federal authorities, while private companies will contribute with 29 billion RUB.
Mr. Krainy, the powerful leader of the new Russian state committee, says the measure is intended to prepare the Russian fishery industry to the upcoming competition from abroad following Russian membership in the World Trade Organisation (WTO).
Today, about 85 percent of the Russian fish catch is sold unprocessed, Rbc.ru reports.
