Russian border guarding for “near abroad”
Prime Minister Vladimir Putin proposes to offer Russian equipment and armament to the neighboring countries’ border guard services.
The Russian model of the border guarding should be adopted by the former Soviet CIS countries, Putin said in yesterday’s meeting in the Russian border commission. He believes the Russian border services’ armament and special equipment can be applied by the neighboring countries border guards.
In the meeting which took place in Petrozavodsk, Republic of Karelia, yesterday, Putin also underlined that Russia can offer training of customs officials and law enforcement representatives, RIA Novosti reports.
Mr. Putin believes coordinated measures of the different countries’ border guard services will help combat cross-border drug trade and organized crime.
As reported by BarentsObserver, cooperation with the CIS countries was a key issue in the meeting.
