Russian population decrease slowing down
The population of Russia the first quarter of 2008 decreased with 80,900 individuals, which is far less than the previous years.
In the first quarter of 2007, the population dropped with 118,000 individuals, while it in the same period in 2006 decreased with as much as 200,800. Meanwhile, 41,9 percent more immigrants moved to Russia in the period compared with 2007. The Russian population by April 1 had 141,9 million inhabitants. Russia will over the next year have to fight negative demographic developments as death rates remain high and birth rates low. Some demographers predict that the population by year 2050 might drop to under 100 million.
