Russia’s Northern Fleet continues its tours on the World’s oceans

At the moment, ten vessels from the Russian Navy are operating on different oceans around the world. Northern Fleet’s missile cruiser “Pyotr Veliky” is the first Russian naval vessel to visit South Africa.

The nuclear-powered missile cruiser “Pyotr Veliky” (Peter the Great) arrived Cape Town on January 12, after days of negotiation with the South African National Directorate for Nuclear Energy about permission to enter, navy news site Navy.ru reports. After the two days long visit, “Pyotr Veliky” will lead a group of six ships that will take part in the joint Russian-Indian naval manoeuvres “Indra-2009”. The manoeuvres are taking place in the Arabian Sea in the end of January, TV21 reports.

After the exercises, the anti-submarine destroyer “Admiral Vinogradov” from the Pacific Fleet will replace the Baltic Fleet frigate “Neustrashimiy”, which has been protecting civilian ships from Somali pirates outside the Horn of Africa since October 2008. “Neustrashimiy” is expected to return to its homebase by the end of January.

The anti-submarine destroyer “Admiral Chabanenko” is on its way back to the home base in Severomorsk after taking part in joint drills with the Venezuelan Navy in the Caribbean Sea. In sentral parts of the Atlantic Ocean, “Admiral Chabanenko” has been conducting firing exercises with guns and anti-aircraft systems, TV21reports.

A task force from the Northern Fleet led by the aircraft carrier “Admiral Kuznetsov” has accomplished an unofficial visit to the Syrian port Tartus, TV21reports. The task force also includes the missile destroyer “Admiral Levchenko” and the support ship “Nikolay Chiker”. The vessel group will continue its tour in the Mediterranean.
