Social unrest looms in Republic of Karelia

Regional authorities in the Republic of Karelia fear that the rapidly increasing prices on bread might trigger public disturbances. Regional Governor Sergey Katanandov himself says a “bread rebellion” looms in the republic.

-The situation is highly worrisome, Governor Katanandov says. -We have to what we can to stagger the price increase, if not it will all end up in a bread rebellion, and then we might be kicked out of this building even before our next assembly, the regional leader adds, Rosbaltnord.ru reports with reference to Stolica na Onega. According to the regional Ministry of Economic Development, bread prices have increased with more than 17 percent only over the last few weeks. Some bakeries have increased prices with more than 30 percent. The price increase can be explained with the higher flour prices, as well as higher production costs, regional Minister of Economic Development, Mr. Mikhail Yurinov, says to Stolica na Onega
