Still much nuclear waste to handle

The largest part of the work on utilization of nuclear waste in Murmansk Oblast is still ahead, says Murmansk Oblast Community Council for Exploitation of Nuclear Energy.

Nearly one million tons of nuclear waste from submarines is still collected at SevRAO’s storage facility in Andreeva Bay, GTRK Murman reports. It will take 300 trips by special train to transport all the waste to the reprocessing plant Mayak in Chelyabinsk.

When the world community connected to the program on nuclear safety in Murmansk Oblast in the end of the last century, it was said that most of the work should be done by 2012. Up to 4 billion USD were allocated for the project. Half of the money has so far been spent and 150 nuclear submarines have been utilized.
