Sub fire in Severodvinsk
No reported radioactive leakages after fire in a scrapped Akula-class submarine last Friday.
The fire in the partly decommissioned nuclear powered submarine K-480 Bars started early Friday morning and was put out at 14:45 the same day at the Zvezdochka naval yard in Severodvinsk, reports Arnews.
The submarine was taken out of active service from Russia’s Northern fleet in 1998. The submarine, named Bars, was the oldest of the Akula-class attack submarines within the Northern fleet and the only of the Akula-class submarines removed from the Northern fleet.
The spent nuclear fuel was removed from the two reactors onboard long time ago, and the fire itself did not cause any leakages of radioactivity, according to official information.
