Sweden cuts its army by one third

Sweden freezes military spending until 2014. Military units will be closed down and the capacity of vital systems will be reduced.

This is the message that Commander in Chief, Haakan Syrén, is expected to deliver to the government at the end of this week, newspaper Dagens Nyheter reports. According to sources within the military headquarters the consequences from the budgetary restrictions will be most severe for the army. It will be cut by one third. The number of soldiers ready for deployment will be reduced from 20.000 to 12.500 and the number of tanks is expected to be cut by half. The government wants to transform battle ready forces into light and easy transportable units with ability to deploy on short notice.
