Test drillings for uranium in Northern Sweden

In the small community of Arvidsjaur in northern Sweden a company is doing test drilling for uranium. Locals fear that the mining activity will destroy the area and are protesting against the company’s plans.

The company Mawson Energi AB has just started the test drillings, which will show if the deposits of uranium are exploitable. Local inhabitant Birgit Lindberg predicts that the mining plans will destroy nature and chase away inhabitants from the area, according to the Norran.se. As long as the company is only performing tests, the locals can not do anything to stop them.

The company’s representative, Folke Søderstrøm, says that the locals do not have anything to fear on basis of the tests they are doing now. The possibilities for exploitable deposits are very small, according to Søderstrøm.
