The gasification of Murmansk

Gazprom subsidiary Gazprom Promgaz is preparing a major gasification program for Murmansk Oblast. The source of the natural gas will be the Shtokman field in the Barents Sea.

Today, Murmansk Oblast takes its energy from hydropower, nuclear energy and thermal power plants. The gasification program includes the laying of gas pipelines to the major populated areas in the region. Also the use of LNG is an alternative for regional companies, Murman.ru reports.

The Murmansk regional government this week met with the Gazprom representatives to discuss the gasification program. In the meeting, regional gas demand was discussed. Also regional pipeline development was raised in the meeting.

The regional administration has earlier confirmed that the gasification of the region will not be possible without the development of the huge 3,8 trillion cubic meter Shtokman field.

As BarentsObserver previously reported, up to five percent of the Shtokman gas might be spent on households and industry in Northwest Russia. A major part of that is likely to be spent in Murmansk Oblast.

A cooperation agreement between the Murmansk regional administration and Gazprom from 2005 includes both the development of the Shtokman field and field installations, as well as pipeline laying to the main regional cities.
