The world’s largest Viking ship

Construction of a 35 meters long Viking ship starts in Western Norway in January 2010.

The ship is planned to be ready for its first voyage in 2013, and has already got the name “Draken Harald Harfagre” (The Dragon Harald Fairhair), Tromsø University’s web site reads.

The ship will be 35 meter long, 8 meter wide and weigh 70 tons. It will be made of oak, have a 300-square-meter sail and a crew of 100 persons. Boat builder Gunnar Eldjarn at Tromsø Museum’s is one of the experienced Norwegian traditional boat builders that will take part in the project.

Harald Fairhair (850 –933) was the first king of Norway. The boat will be built close to his royal residence at Avaldsnes, Norway.
