Thinner ice in Russian Barents Sea
Studies from the Russian Hydro Meteorology Service indicate that the ice layers in the Russian part of the Barents Sea are up to 19 percent thinner than normal.
According to a prognosis from the Russian Federal Service on Hydro-Meteorology and Monitoring of the Environment, the ice layers in the region will be between 5-19 percent thinner than what is normal the first six month of the year.
Also in the Kara Sea, the ice layers are expected to be thinner than normal this year. The Hydro-Meteorology Service believes ice in the area are 10-19 percent thinner than usual.
The Hydro-Meteorology Service has been conducted ice measurements in the Arctic since the early 1940s. The researchers present both short-term, medium-term and long-term prognosis of the Arctic ice, the service website informs
