University rector arrested, charged for corruption
Rector of the Northern Medical University in Arkhangelsk has been arrested and charged for corruption. His university colleagues are confident that he is innocent.
The arrest of Pavel Sidorov took place on 24 April. Regional law enforcement authorities arrested the university leader as he was accepting a bribe, Rusnord.ru reports.
Mr. Sidorov will be charged for corruption. He remains arrested in Arkhangelsk, Severinfo.ru reports.
At the same time, the university staff believes the rector is innocent and has started a campaign on his release. Letters have been sent to President Dmitry Medvedev, federal human rights ombudsman Valery Lukin and the Arkhangelsk Prosecutor’s Office, the university website informs.
The Northern Medical University is Russia’s northernmost medical university. It has about 10,000 students.
