USA: Russia will become more important
The U.S. National Intelligence Council in a new report concludes that the role of Russia in global affairs will strengthen significantly in the years to come. The report outlines demography as a major Russian risk factor, while climate change is described as a possible plus.
If Russia does the right things, the country could by year 2025 become among the top three most influential countries in the world, the report “Global Trends 2025: A Transformed World” reads.
An unprecedented transfer of wealth roughly from West to East now under way will continue for the foreseeable future, the report reads. Russia is one of the countries which will play an increasingly global important role along with China and India.
“The whole international system—as constructed following WWII—will be revolutionized. Not only will new players—Brazil, Russia, India and China— have a seat at the international high table, they will bring new stakes and rules of the game”, the report “Global Trends 2025: A Transformed World” states.
At the same time, the report outlines major challenges for Russia, among them the country’s major demographic problem. The Russian population could drop 10 percent by 2025, the authors believe.
According to the report, climate change could eventually give Russia huge economic advantages as melting ice make Arctic minerals and hydrocarbons more available. At the same time the warming climate also poses a threat against the country’s Arctic infrastructure, Itar-Tass writes.
