Where is the snow?
Levi alpine skiing World Cup will be canceled if the temperatures don’t drop.
October has been unusual warm in most parts of the Barents Region. In Levi in Finnish Lapland, the opening race for the 2011/2012 alpine World Cup is scheduled to take place on November 12 and 13. But, with the current temperatures, the snow cannons can’t operate effectively since the air temperatures are just below zero during night and frequently several degrees plus.
The snow-canons at the ski-resorts needs days with temperatures under minus 5 to operate effectively.
In northern Norway, October has been unusual warm, reports the metrological institute of Norway. The forecast for the week to come also predicts temperatures above freezing.
Only in areas above 3-400 meters have so far got snow along the Arctic coast of the Barents Sea and in inland areas of the Barents Region.
