Wind power for Teriberka?
The Murmansk regional administration considers to build a windmill park in the area of Teriberka on the Barents Sea coast.
The issue was discussed in a meeting between Governor Yuri Yevdokimov and two Dutch wind power companies this week. Studies have estimated the wind power potential of the Kola Peninsula to about 1000 MWh. Press spokesman for the Murmansk administration, Nikolay Sigin, says the first step in the development could be a 200 MWh windmill power plant in the area of Teriberka. If the Teriberka windmill project becomes reality, it will mean another major industrial initiative in the area. From before, Gazprom and its partners in the Shtokman project have chosen Teriberka as the site for a huge gas processing plant. It will be a long way to go before wind power becomes a substantial part of regional power generation in Murmansk Oblast. As noted in this weeks by Governor Yevdokimov himself, several wind power projects have failed to materialize.
