Workshop on work in harsh climate
The Barents region is experiencing a new era of industrialisation and new interest in its resources and opportunities. Climatic conditions pose a challenge at several workplaces most of the year, with low temperatures as a key factor.
This has an influence on workers, equipment and the work process itself, and can affect safety, health and productivity.
Professionals from all over the Barents region recently gathered in Tromsø, Northern Norway, for a 2-day workshop devoted to two main topics: work in cold environment and health challenges in high north mining, the University Hospital of North Norway writes in a press release.
The aim of the workshop was to provide a regional platform for exchange of ideas and new knowledge on topics relevant to health and exposure at workplaces in the region.
The meeting attracted participants from several centres of expertise, from science, health care and industry, and was an important event for the future development of new knowledge and solutions in this field across borders, to be regarded as a collective expertise in the Barents region.
The workshop was organized by the Department of Occupational and Environmental Medicine at the University Hospital in Northern Norway with Department of Occupational and Environmental Medicine at Umeå University Hospital as co-organizer. It was funded from the Barents Secretariat, the Norwegian Ministry of Health and Care and Nordic Council.
The next meeting will be hosted by the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health in Oulu in 2012, making this a biannual event, hopefully established on the future charts of specialists in the field.
