World’s northernmost monastery to be rebuilt

The Russian Orthodox Church will build a chapel on the site where the Trifon Pechenga monastery stood before the fire last fall.

The construction of the new chapel will be started already this summer, Murman.ru reports. The Trifon Pechenga monastery, the northernmost Orthodox monastery in the world, last December burned down to the ground. Since the munch Trifon spread Orthodoxy to the Russian North in the mid 16th century, Pechenga has been the site for a monastery. Parts of the burnt-down monastery building originated from the late 19th century. In addition to the new chapel, a new monastery church will be built in the nearby town of Luostary, Murman.ru reports Photo: the Trifon Pechenga monastery before the fire (murmanspas.ru)
