Young parliamentarians meet in borderland
50 young politicians from Northwest-Russia and the Nordic countries gathered in Kirkenes on Tuesday to discuss regional political cooperation across the borders in the north.
The participants represent different regional and local political levels in Northwest Russia and the Norwegian, Swedish and Danish parliaments. The forum is the second; following up last year’s meeting between young politicians in Murmansk.
The main aim of the forum is to see how the politicians can act to improve the possibilities for young people to live, travel and communicate in Northwest Russia and the Nordic countries. Also; energy- and climate change was a topic discussed at the roundtable in Kirkenes, the Norwegian border town to Russia in the north.
In his opening speech at the forum, Mr. Evgeny Nikora – Speaker of the Murmansk Regional Duma underlined the importance to facilitate such meetings between young politicians across the borders in the north. Nikora also said the northern regions support the on-going process of achieving visa-freedom between the countries and to improve communications between the northern countries.
