“EU-Russia relations at a crossroads”
Relations between the EU and Russia have reached a crossroads, the European Council members concluded in yesterday’s extraordinary session. They expressed grave concern with Russia’s actions in Georgia and condemned the country for its recognition of South Ossetia and Abkhasia. At the same time, the EU politicians underlined that there is no other alternative than a strong and constructive relationship between sides.
“With the crisis in Georgia, relations between the EU and Russia have reached a crossroads. The European Council considers that given the interdependence between the European Union and Russia, and the global problems they are facing, there is no desirable alternative to a strong relationship, based on cooperation, trust and dialogue, respect for the rule of law and the principles recognised by the United Nations Charter and by the OSCE”, the council conclusions read.
The statement also highlights the importance of avoiding isolationist trends in Russia.
-We call on Russia to join with us in the making this fundamental choice in favour of mutual interest, understanding and cooperation
At the same time, the statement from the council in strong words condemns Russia for its actions in Georgia, and expressed grave concern for development. It also reads that the EU now should step up work with the diversification of its energy supplies and supply routes in order to get less dependent on Russia.
