“High North not on U.S. agenda”

Former U.S. deputy secretary of defense John Hamre says the USA will not have the High North on its agenda “for a long time”. The current President of the Centre of Strategic and International Studies in Washington says his country is too busy with world crisis to look north.

In a seminar organised by the Norwegian Shipowners’ Association last week, Mr. Hamre showed no enthusiasm about prospects in the High North. The USA will remain too busy with world crisis in Afghanistan, Iraq Pakistan and North Korea to think about long perspectives in the North, he said, newspaper Aftenposten reports.

The USA is not and will not for a long time have focus on the High North, he added.
