- Take action in the Suprun case
Journalists and researchers from northern Sweden has sent an open letter to the Swedish Foreign Minsiter Carl Bildt asking him to take action in support to the Arkhangelsk professor Mikhail Suprun.
Professor Suprun, from the Pomor State University in Arkhangelsk, is accused by FSB of disclosure of confidential information in connection with his work with the German-Russian project of publishing the “Book of Memory” about the ethnic Germans repressed during the Stalin’s period of the USSR.
As BarentsObserver reported two weeks ago, FSB investigators claim Suprun has illegally copied personal data of the Russian Germans in the archives of the regional department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. He then took this information and sent it abroad claims FSB, the successor of KGB.
The letter to Carl Bildt is also signed by severl writers and Barents Press, an organization with journalists from the four countries in the Barents Region.
In the letter witten to Carl Bildt, the Barents journalists asks about both Bildt’s, and the other foreign ministers in the Barents Council, view about the fact that an individual in the Barents Region can’t conduct his free work as an researcher in cooperation with other collegaes in the region.
Carl Bildt took over the chairmanship of the Barents Council from Russia’s Sergey Lavrov at the Barents Euro-Arctic Council meeting in Murmansk on Thursday, as reported by BarentsObserver.
