Three candidates for governor in Karelia

Russia’s ruling party United Russia has named three candidates to take over the position as governor in the Republic of Karelia.

Sergei Katanandov resigned from the post as governor in Karelia on June 30th, after being the head of the region since 1998. Andrei Nelidov was the same day appointed by President Dmitri Medvedev as acting head of Karelia.

Nelidov is one of the three candidates suggested by United Russia.

The two other are Viktor Kidyaev - member of the State Duma and Pavel Chernov – Prime Minister of the government of Karelia, reports Karelinform with reference to the web portal of United Russia.

Both Nelidov and Chernov are residents of Karelia, while Kidyaev comes from Mordovia.

The new governor of Karelia will be appointed by President Medvedev, but it is expected that one of the three candidates suggested by United Russia will be selected.
