Border Guards get new detention centres
The Russian Border Guard Service will get its own detention facilities for people caught in irregularities along the country’s border.
According to a new decree from the Federal Security Service (FSB), the new detention centres will be built in accordance with high international standards and meet human rights requirements.
The centres will have cells for people caught in violating border regulations. The detainees will be held in the centres before facing trial in Russia or returned to their country of origin, newspaper Rossiiskaya Gazeta reports.
Until now, border guards have usually taken use of ordinary prisons for the border violators.
As informed recently by the FSB, more than 111 million people in 2009 crossed the Russian border. Of them, more than 118,000 were caught in having entered the country illegally.
