Joint air bases for Sweden and Norway
Swedish Minister of Defence Sten Tolgfors wants his armed forces to develop joint airbases with Norway. Part of his proposal is a joint base in northern Sweden.
Enhanced Nordic defence cooperation is climbing on the agenda of all the Nordic governments. Especially between Sweden and Norway discussions are intensifying. Swedish Defence Minister Tolgfors now proposes new initiatives. Sweden and Norway can share airbases, he says. The two countries can have a joint base in northern Sweden and one in southern Norway, he says. He believes such a model would facilitate joint training, exercises, technical maintenance and surveillance. The defence cooperation talks take place on the backdrop of Norways negotiations with US. Lockheed Martin and Swedens Saab over the acquisition of new fighter jets. If Norway chooses to buy Swedish aircrafts the defence cooperation between the two neighbours are likely to take off.
