Sweden freezes military contacts with Russia

The Swedish Prime Minister yesterday announced that his government is cancelling all joint military training with Russia. He also said that all military exchange visits between the countries will be put on halt.

-Under the current war situation, the Government considers it not an issue to engage in joint military training with Russia or conduct exchange visits with Russian military units, Prime Minister Frederik Reinfeldt says in a press release.

Originally, a Swedish Navy visit to a Russian port was to take place in September, but this will now be cancelled.

“The Russian troops must end the activities which is destabilizing Georgia, for example the destruction of infrastructure […] The cease-fire plan must be completed quickly and completely, and the Russian troops must be withdrawn to the positions they had before the conflict”.

The Swedish government also states that the Russian intervention in Georgia is “unacceptable and a violation of international law”. “This will have consequences for Moscow’s relations with the surrounding world”, the press release reads.
