10 million RUB for indigenous peoples

An agreement signed by the Murmansk regional administration and the Russian Ministry of Regional Development last week includes a 10,1 million RUB allocation to the indigenous peoples communities in the Kola Peninsula.

The money will be spent on support measures for the social and economical development of the indigenous peoples in the region, the Murmansk government website informs. The federal government accounts for 6.5 million of the sum, while the Murmansk regional budget accounts for the rest.

An indigenous peoples’ development programme for the period 2009-2013 was adopted by regional authorities last year. The Saami people is the biggest indigenous group at the Kola Peninsula with about 2000 individuals.
