Honorary consulate to open in autumn

Norway will open its honorary consulate in Arkhangelsk in September.

Earlier this week, Norway’s Consul General in Murmansk, Jon Elvedal Fredriksen met with Arkhangelsk governor IIlya Mikhalchuk and discussed the frame for the opening of a Norwegian honorary consulate in Arkhangelsk, reports SeverInfo.

It was last Janaury that State Secretary in the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ms. Elisabeth Walaas announced that a honorary consulate will be opened in the largest city within the Barents Region; Arkhangelsk, as reported by BarentsObserver.

There are an increasing number of joint projects between regions of Norway and Arkhangelsk within business, education and cultural relations. Also, as SeverInfo reports, cooperation between Norway and Arkhangelsk will be important in the fields of oil- and gas developments and the development of the Northern Sea route.

Norway’s Consul General in Murmansk Jon Elvedal Fredriksen says the opening could be hold together with Norwegian Cultural Days. Governor Ilya Mikhalchuk supported this idea and suggested that these events could be arranged at the same time a the Margaritinskaya fair, an annual huge event for Arkhangelsk each September.
