New university status in Arkhangelsk
President Dmitry Medvedev Wednesday signed a decree transforming the State Technical University in Arkhangelsk into Northern (Arctic) Federal University.
The university will get its new federal status within three months, according to the presidential decree. In addition to Arkhangelsk, four other northern universities in Russia will be transformed.
The new universities will get a special status with wide level of autonomy and guaranteed federal funding.
The Government was also instructed to work jointly with regional executive authorities to provide state support to the new universities.
