Russia – not a peaceful nation?

This year’s Global Peace Index ranks Russia number 136 of 144 countries on the level of peace.

The index places Russia after Zimbabve and before Pakistan with a score of 2,75 on a one (best) to five (worst) scale. The score is still better than the previous year. The country get especially low score with regard to perceptions of criminality in society, number of homicides per 100,000 people, number of jailed population per 100,000 people, respect for human rights and relations with neighbouring countries. The low ranking of Russia is linked with the country’s war with Georgia last year, analysts told RIA Novosti. This is the third edition of the Global Peace Index (GPI). The index has been tested against a range of potential “drivers” or potential determinants of peace – including levels of democracy and transparency, education and material wellbeing, the GPI website informs. In the ranking, Norway, Sweden and Finland are ranked respectively on second, sixth and ninth place.
