Sky-high level of corruption

The corruption level in Russia is 2000 times higher than what official figures indicate, the Russian Prosecutor’s Investigating Committee says.

Russian businesses have to pay an estimated 33 billion USD in bribes to corrupt officials, a study from the INDEM Foundation shows. The incomes of the unfaithful officials amount to as much as one third of the country’s national budget.

A representative of the Prosecutor’s Office recently said to Interfax that up to 6800 cases of bribery the last year. –It is obvious that the actual figures are far higher, the Prosecutor representative adds.

President Dmitrii Medvedev has made the fight against corruption a top priority and has already taken measures to protect small businesses against corrupt officials. He has also introduced limitations on state officials’ rights to join corporate structures.
