Finland might compensate for Russian timber tariffs

Finnish Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Paavo Väyrynen says a solution to the dispute over Russia’s rising export tariffs is in the pipeline. The Finnish timber importers might get their losses compensated by government subsidies.

Meanwhile, Russian truck companies might be the ones having to pay for the deal. According to the minister, a toll on Russian trucks transiting through Finland might be imposed and be used as a source to finance the support package to Finnish industry. Väyrynen discussed the raw timber tariff issue by phone with his Russian counterpart Elvira Nabiullina on Wednesday, Yle reports. The Finnish-Russian timber dispute comes after Russia this year started to increase tariffs on timber exports. By next summer, the tariffs will be boosted from four EUR to 50 EUR per cubic meter. Russia argues that it needs to increase export tariffs in order to strengthen its domestic processing industry
