Seismic shooting scares fish away

The fishing catch outside Vesterålen i northern Norway has collapsed this season. The fishermen say that the ongoing seismic shooting in the area is to blame.

The amount of pollock is very low this season and the amount of Halibut has been halved in three years, according to the Norwegian Coastal Fishing Association. Many fishermen now intend to demand compensation from the Norwegian Government for lost income. They argue that it is obvious that seismic shooting has resulted in a setback for fish catch. The catch of pollock this season is only 10 percent of what is normal, NRK reports. The amount of the fishermens’ claim is not yet clear.

The Norwegian Petroleum Directorate says that it is well known that seismic shooting can have the effect to scare fish away, but will not comment on the figures presented by the fishing association.
