Slow economy, less jobs

Russian authorities say 1123 companies are cutting staff and that 45,000 people will lose their jobs in 2009. In neighbouring Finland, the Ministry of Employment say 10,000 people are expected to be dismissed this year. In Norway, the Central Bank believes 40,000 jobs will vanish.

The world financial crisis and subsequent economic downturn is not taking its toll in the labour markets. The Russian Migration Service now announces that 1123 companies are cutting staff and that 45,000 Russians will be dismissed, Newsru.com reports. Meanwhile, in neighbouring Finland, the Ministry of Employment and the Economy believes zero growth in the national economy could mean 10,000 fewer jobs in 2009. Even more Finnish jobs would be at stake if wasn’t for the retirement boom over the upcoming years, Yle News reports. Also in Norway, companies are starting to cut staff. As reported by BarentsObserver, Central Bank leader Svein Gjerdrem believes 40,000 jobs will be lost over the next years. A new study from the Confederation of Norwegian Enterprise indicates that as many as half of all Norwegian companies now are putting investment projects on halt.
