The last days of a pirate trawler
The trawler “Nemansky” attracted wide international attention because of its illegal operations in the Barents Sea. Now the vessel, which has been under arrest in the Norwegian Arctic port of Vadsø for more than a year, is towed away to scrap metal traders.
Late 31 December 2007, the Nemansky secretly sneaked out of the northern Norwegian port of Kirkenes, where it had been arrested for several months due to insufficient sailing documentation. One week later, the trawler was found drifting without engine power in the Barents Sea. In stormy weather the ship was towed by the Norwegian Coast Guard to the port of Vadsø.
There, the pirate trawler ended its career. For more than a year, the vessel has been left abandoned in the far northern port.
According to newspaper Finnmarken, the Norwegian Fishery Directorate has granted permission for the towing of the vessel to scrap metal traders further south in the country. The Nemansky is not registered in any country’s ship register.
