Wants Shtokman gas to expand Kola industry

PhosAgro considers building a new plant to make phosphate fertilizers using natural gas from the Shtokman project.

PhosAgro is one of Europe’s largest producers of phosphate fertilizers and operates OJSC Apatit on the Kola Peninsula. From the mines in the Kirovsk area, the company today produces nepheline concentrate.

If the Shtokman natural gas field in the Barents Sea will be developed and part of the gas made available for domestic use, PhosAgro considers building a nitrogen plant and a diammonium phosphate plant on the Kola Peninsula, CEO Maxim Volkov told Bloomberg on Monday.

Another plan includes production of alumina where nepheline can be used as a substitute for bauxite. According to Bloomberg, PhosAgro is already in talks with aluminium producer Rusal about the plans.

Rusal operates a aluminium smelter in Kandalaksha on the Kola Peninsula, some few tens of kilometres south of PhosAgro’s mines in Kirovsk.
