Arctic airports for Gazprom

Russian energy giant Gazprom considers to construct an airport near the Bovanenkovskoe field in the Yamal Peninsula. The company also intends to build a new airport close to Teriberka, the hub for the Shtokman project.

During a meeting with the regional administration of the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug this week, representatives of Gazprom discussed the development of the Bovanenkovskoe field, Rosbaltnord.ru reports.

In the meeting, the Gazprom representatives confirmed that the construction of an airport near the field is being considered. The field, one of the biggest in northern Russia, will be developed and operated by people who are flown in an out of the area. The Bovanenkovskoe field is to start production in year 2011.

Gazprom is building major new infrastructure in connection with its development of Yamal. A railway will be built to the peninsula and a pipeline will be laid across the Baidaretskaya Bay and to Ukhta in the Komi Republic.

The Bovanenkovskii field is one of two top investment projects for Gazprom. The other top project is the Shtokman field in the Barents Sea. As previously reported by BarentsObserver, Gazprom also here considers to build a new airport.
