Army abandons world's northernmost garrison
The Norwegian Armed Forces are likely to abandon its base in Porsanger in the Norwegian far north. With the decision, the northnorthernmost parts of Norway are left only with the military personnel guarding the border to Russia.
Both the Norwegian Defence and the municipality of Porsanger now confirm that the complete closure of the base is likely. The Porsanger Garrison has the last years experienced gradual cuts from 1300 men in 1992 to todays 100 soldiers. Now, the base sees the end of all permanent military presence. The Porsanger garrison has been the northernmost in the world. The last year the base has trained elite soldiers, many of whom have participated in international missions. With the decision to close the Prosanger Garrison, the northernmost Norwegian county of Finnmark will be left without regular army units. The only soldiers left in the region will be the man and women guarding the border to Russia
