Demonstrations against new working hours

Employees at StatoilHydro’s LNG plant Melkøya are dissatisfied with new working hours that recently were implemented. Yesterday around 200 workers demonstrated against the new agreement.

Workers at StatoilHydro’s LNG plant Melkøya outside the northern Norwegian town of Hammerfest are used to having two weeks of work and then three weeks off, Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation reports. According to the new agreement on working hours that was implemented May 11, workers will have a normal working day of 7.5 hours with weekends off and free home travel every 14th day.

The new regulations will make it harder for the workers to spend free time with their families. A large proportion of the workers at Melkøya are commuters living in others parts of Norway.

- For family people, the new agreement is totally unacceptable, says employee representative Nils Knutsen. He believes the new working hours can lead to discontent at the workplace and make it harder to get specialists to work at Melkøya.
