Gas pipes and coal give boost to Arkhangelsk Port

Shipping of gas pipes to the Yamal Peninsula and export of coal is boosting the results of the Arkhangelsk Sea Commercial Port. Over the first nine months of the year, the port handled 1,33 million tons of goods, which is a 25 percent increase year-on-year from 2007.

In the course of the first three quarters of the year, export shipping has dropped while domestic shipping of goods has increased, the port website informs.

The main reason for the good results is the shipping of gas pipes for Gazprom’s Bovanenkovo project in the Yamal Peninsula. The Gas company is currently in the process of the laying big-diameter pipes from the field to Ukhta in the Komi Republic.

-We have sent off one ship per day, port director Viktor Vorobyov confirms. -100 pipes per day – that is what the pipeline company “Defender” needs, he adds.

The pipeline company is currently in the process of laying pipes across the more than 70 wide Baydarata Bay on the western side of the Yamal Peninsula.

The Arkhangelsk port has this year also successfully exported coal for the Mechel company. 380,000 tons of coal has been shipped abroad, which is a record for the port company.
