Gazprom, Rosatom signed Shtokman agreement
Russian gas major Gazprom has signed an agreement with state nuclear energy company Rosatom on cooperation in the Shtokman project, as well as in fields in the Yamal Peninsula.
The agreement, which covers a six-year period, was signed by Gazprom head Aleksey Miller and head of Rosatom Sergey Kiriyenko last week.
According to the agreement, the two companies are to cooperate about strategic offshore projects, among them the Shtokman project. The companies are also to cooperate in the gas-rich Yamal Peninsula and in the Far East, a press release from Gazprom reads.
The deal also covers cooperation on energy supplies to pipeline projects and joint research initiatives, among them on the development of competitive technology on the exploration, extraction, transport, storage and processing of gas and condensate. A joint coordination council is to help follow up the agreement.
-The successful resolution of Gazprom’s strategic development of new oil and gas regions is closely linked with the wide implementation of new technology and equipment. The agreement with Rosatom secures a high level of innovation in our projects and helps us solve the problem of replacing imports [with domestic products], Mr. Miller says.
The agreement opens up for enhanced speculations about the possible application of nuclear energy in the Shtokman project in the Barents Sea.
