New shipbuilding to boost Russia offshore

Russian shipyards are inefficient and in need of “comprehensive modernization”, Russian PM Vladimir Putin said in a meeting last week. He now calls for the construction of brand new shipyards, which are to help Russia meet demands within shipping and on the shelf.

In a meeting on non-military shipbuilding last week, Russian Premier Putin underlined that Russian shipyards are inefficient and in need of “comprehensive modernization”. He called for development of new capacities within the industry. –The experience shows that the effect is best when the industry is created from scratch, Putin underlined in the meeting, a government press release informs.

The prime minister especially highlighted Russia’s need for offshore oil and gas installations, tankers, icebreakers, floating nuclear power stations and specialized ships like research vessels.

In the same meeting, Russian Minister of Industry and Energy Viktor Khristenko confirmed that his ministry supports the construction of a new 38,5 billion RUB shipyard by the Gulf of Finland. An application for a credit from the Vnesheconombank has already been submitted, the minister said, Vedomosti reports.

The meeting devoted to shipbuilding was held as the government includes another 19 shipyards in the United Shipbuilding Corporation, a federal shipbuilding giant. The government now also launches it new Action Programme for the shipbuilding sector.

According to Putin, Russia will by 2030 need a total of 307 new vessels for Gazprom and Rosneft alone. Also other sectors will need a major number of new ships. 265 new trawlers are planned built in the same period.

Russia today has a total of 168 shipbuilding companies, of which 86 are state-owned, the premier said in the meeting.
