North Pole cruise with newest icebreaker

The nuclear powered icebreaker named “50-years of victory” will make its maiden tourist cruise from Murmansk to the North Pole in June. The vessels two nuclear reactors provides 75,000 horsepower.

If you can afford to cash out 22,000 USD for the standard cabin the Russian nuclear powered icebreaker brings you all the way from the Arctic port of Murmansk to the top of the world for a 16 days cruise.

The icebreaker, crashing through ice meters thick with a force reminiscent of a 9.0 earthquake, will also makes stops at the Islands of Franz Josef’s Land and the wealthy tourists can fly onshore with the icebreakers own helicopter.

The Russian fleet of nuclear powered icebreakers, with Murmansk as their homeport, has offered tourist cruises to the North Pole since the early 90-ties. The newest icebreaker “50-years of victory” is the first of the icebreakers which is special built for such cruises in the Arctic. The vessel has everything from saloon, lounge, saunas, gym, indoor pool, shop, elevators etc.

The first trips starts from Murmansk on June 24th, and will be followed by similar cruises in both July and August this summer.

Russia is the only country in the world operating a fleet of civilian nuclear powered vessels. All of them is based in Murmansk and operated by the Murmansk Shipping Company.
