Northern Norway blinded by oil expectations
Head of the Bellona Foundation, Frederic Hauge, believes the population in the northern parts of Norway has been tricked by the oil industry. He is confident that the local populations benefits from the industry will be insignificant
The environmentalist believes ENIs decision not to land the oil from Goliat in the Barents Sea illustrates the problem. -The oil industry has made people believe that the oil from Goliat will be brought to land and thus spur local economy and employment. However, this has never been a realistic alternative, Mr Hauge says to newspaper Nordlys. He believes that similar offshore solutions will be chosen also in the Lofoten and Vesterålen areas. It is a long way between visions and reality in the North, Mr. Hauge concludes. The leader of the Norwegian environmental organisation argues that the laying of super-optic fibre cables would have far bigger importance for regional employment than the oil and gas industry.
